The History of the Christmas Cracker

The tradition of the Christmas Cracker was started in the mid-1840s by London confectioner Tom Smith. He was inspired by the French 'bonbon' sweet wrappers, but added a "pop" sound to make them more exciting, creating the signature snap we know today.

Initially called "Cosaques," the treats contained sweets and small fortunes. The sweets were later replaced with small toys, paper hats, and, most famously, the bad joke. Over the years, the cracker became an essential part of the British Christmas dinner, always promising a moment of silly fun and a dubious piece of trivia.
