About Liverpool

Perched on the River Mersey, Liverpool transformed global trade as the home of the world's first commercial enclosed wet dock, opened in 1715. It's the beating heart of English football - birthplace of the Merseyside Derby, England's longest-running top-flight rivalry, sparked in 1894 after Everton's split from Liverpool FC in 1892. Goodison Park, opened that same year, was among the first purpose-built football grounds in England, while Liverpool FC reigns at nearby Anfield. Dubbed the World Capital of Pop by Guinness World Records, Liverpool has produced more UK No.1 hits per capita than any other city. The Beatles shot to fame from the sweaty confines of the Cavern Club, performing there nearly 300 times between 1961 and 1963. The city is also home to Europe’s oldest Chinatown, more museums and galleries than any UK city outside London, and locals affectionately known as Scousers - a nickname born from lobscouse, the hearty stew that fueled dockside workers and gave the accent its name.

  • The mythical Liver Birds (Bella & Bertie) atop the Royal Liver Building were intended to resemble eagles - but locals modelled them after cormorants instead.
  • Liverpool was officially founded in 1207, when King John granted it a royal charter. Legend says he chose the site to make his trading voyages easier - and perhaps a little cheaper!
  • St George’s Hall, completed in 1854, featured one of the earliest examples of a steam-powered ventilation system in Britain - a forerunner to modern air conditioning.
